To which requirements should my boat comply in Belgium?

The prescribed equipment on board of pleasure craft depends on the sailing area. More or less, this can be divided into sea waters (territorial sea, ports on the coast, Beneden-Zeeschelde, port of Gent, Gent-Terneuzen, Zeebrugge-Brugge en Oostende-Brugge) and inland waters.

Belgian sea waters

Pleasure craft, except canoe, kayak and sailboard

  • Rescue equipment: lifebelt for each person on board, luminous lifebuoy when the vessel is undertaking nighttime trips, adequate emergency signals including flares.
  • Nautical instrumentsfog horn, magnetic compass, navigation lights, plummet
  • Equipment: anchor, pump or bailer, sufficient number of oars with their studs, 20m line for all kinds of work, fire extinguisher for motor yachts, hammer, boat hook, electric lamp suitable for giving light signals, complete set of sails for sailing yachts.
  • Surgical and bandaging materials: Waterproof box with all the necessary bandage and other common pharmaceutical products.
  • Documentscertificate of registration, double insurance policy, breviary, updated sea maps.

Canoe and kayak

  • Rescue equipment: inflatable lifebuoy or inflatable pillows
  • Nautical instruments: small foghorn, double tone flute.
  • Equipment: spare paddle in the case of a one-seater, mooring rope of at least 10m, inflatable point air bags in front and rear for folding boats, grappling hook, if necessary the number plate of the association to which they belong or of which the owner is a member.

Sailing board and kitesurf

  • Rescue equipment: Wear an insulated suit.
  • Equipment: 2 manual flare lights, mast to plank fixing system.

Inland waterways: except Gemeenschappelijke Maas and Brussel-Schelde

Pleasurecraft

(Except: competition rowing boat and training rowing boat, canoe and kayak, sailboard, surfboard, inflatable boat not suitable to be propelled by motor, raft, small vessel with hull length)

  • Rescue equipment:  life belt (or pillow or vest) for every person on board; persons on watercrafts must wear a life belt.
  • Nautical instrumentsVHF for motor vessels longer than 7 m and fog horn
  • Equipment (except for personal watercraft): Anchor or dredge, pump or bailer, spare propellant, 2 ropes at least equal to the length of the vessel, fire extinguisher for motor yachts.
